[photo’s of my ‘sprog’ place holding for my own headshot]
I started taking pictures in 1998 and have had a camera in my hand since that first high school photography class. In the early 2000s, I purchased an early version of Canon’s digital SLR camera: 6 megapixels of revolutionary resolution! Most of my image-making was centred around exploring and travel. In 2007, I enrolled at the now shuttered Focal Point photography school to expand my knowledge of the technical and creative side of my hobby. Following up on my formal photography education, I spent a year completing the Electronic Media and Design program at Langara College. This training continues to be invaluable when it comes to helping clients flesh out the needs of their images.
Fast forward to 2018 when, after a few years working in construction as a carpenter’s apprentice and junior project manager, I captured some images of a project we had recently completed. A flashbulb moment: is this what people feel like when they do what they love, and what they know best? While I knew I had more to learn about this genre of photography (I didn’t quite comprehend how MUCH there was to learn!), I had found something that fit with the way I think and create. I knew that sweating over the small stuff, such as moving the camera a half inch, could make or break an image. I knew that the post-processing skills I had learned through the years would help me create images that look and, more importantly, feel like representations of the space I was in.
Here we are in 2024 and I’m still hooked. The challenge of creating an image that captivates the attention of a viewer while still showcasing my client’s work is incredibly rewarding, satisfying my creative needs each and every shoot. I’m still striving to be world-class, constantly re-evaluating my techniques, gear and workflow in the pursuit of creating the strongest images I can.
In my pursuit of being considered “world-class”, here are some of the considerations I put into my images:
Showcase your selections through; texture, shape, light and colour.
Showcase your solutions to your clients needs.
Create images that evoke a feeling; curiosity, calm, tension, serenity, chaos.
You strive to create spaces people want to be in, and I strive to create images people want to fall in.

2 | Booking, Contracts, Usage & Licensing
After we’ve established the project needs, it’s time for the business side.
Booking: Factoring in variables (completion dates, move-in dates, weather considerations, season considerations, submission deadlines), we find a date or multiple dates that are appropriate.
Contract: KRJ Photography has a contract that is set up to avoid confusion when it comes to our responsibilities and those of our clients. We like clarity, and seek to ensure everyone is on the same page. We want to protect our clients interests.
Usage & Licensing: When a final image files is delivered, you are receiving a license to use the image. Your license is not transferrable and does not offer the ability to gift or resell to any other party. Licensing can seem complicated - reach out with any questions you have! Here’s a great video with a synopsis on how licensing works: link
3 | Site Visit
Ideally we have access to the site prior to the shoot day. Exploration of the project in-person allows for us to really explore and plan our the shoot. If you can attend the site visit, it really lets us to collaborate on the key portions of the project and highlight the most important portions.
4 | Shoot Day
Our typical shoot day is dawn to dusk. This does vary depending on site availability, budget and size. We arrive with equipment and start documenting the site. Images discussed during the Discovery and Site Visit are prioritized and we create any additional images we see.
5 | Proof Gallery
In order to control costs, we deliver a proof gallery with brief edits applied. From this gallery, you select the images you feel will best reflect your project. It is this selection that receive final edits—you control the final number of images, and as such, you control the final cost of the shoot.
6 | Final Edits
We create final edits of the selected images, removing imperfections, compositing lighting layers, manipulating the image files to create an accurate representation of what our eyes saw when we entered the space. We deliver v1.0 to you and request feedback. From your feedback we make final tweaks to the images.
7 | Delivery and Payment
We will send a link to an online gallery, along with a download PIN that allows access to multiple file sizes. We are happy to help walk through the download process, or come up with another delivery solution if needed. Our preference for payment is through e-transfer or cheque.
In the spirit of transparency and collaboration we break out our pricing into the following categories: Creative fee | Expenses | Post-processing | Licensing
Creative Fee: Covers our time on site, including the use of our standard equipment. This fee covers the time spent capturing the digital files, along with development of the proof gallery.
Expenses: This covers any fees relating to talent, specialized equipment, craft services and travel.
Post-processing: This covers the retouching services for the final selected images. Includes color corrections, object removal, compositing and retouching of imperfections.
Licensing: Image licensing is what permits usage of images.
How much does all this cost? In the same way every project you have is different in scope and cost, every project we work on is different in scope and cost.
